What Is Servant Leadership, And Why Is It Important?

A review of R.K. Greenleaf's 'Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness' and how it can be applied in business.

Servant Leadership is a unique concept that puts the needs of those being led ahead of the leader’s desires. It’s a powerful way to inspire and motivate teams to reach their full potential.

In his book Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness, R.K. Greenleaf examines the concept of Servant Leadership and how it can be applied in business. He argues that traditional leadership focuses on power and control, while Servant Leadership focuses on serving and helping those who follow. This approach helps build trust and community while achieving a shared vision and mission. But it’s not always easy to embrace this kind of leadership, especially in a culture that values service or follows Christian beliefs. That’s why it’s important to understand the characteristics of successful Servant Leaders.

Servant Leaders are good listeners; they have empathy, are aware of their strengths and weaknesses, are selfless, are open to new ideas, and are encouraging. Servant Leaders also lead by example, cultivating trust within their teams and focusing on collaboration, innovation and feedback. They think long-term and are accountable to everyone in the organization.

Additionally, Servant Leaders are committed to the growth of their employees, providing training and continuous learning opportunities. The importance of Servant Leadership cannot be overstated. It creates a nurturing environment where workers feel appreciated and respected, resulting in higher employee morale and engagement. It also helps businesses grow, empowering employees to do their best work.

Organizations can benefit from Servant Leadership training to ensure their managers understand what it takes to be a successful Servant Leader. This training should focus on emotional intelligence and how to apply Servant Leadership in the modern workplace. My leadership development practice focuses on how leaders can positively impact followers’ mindsets and behaviours. The servant leadership perspective has certainly added to my toolkit. It will also help me to help leaders develop a critical consciousness of their roles in service as an enabling variable for their success in their leadership roles.

Take the time to understand and apply Servant Leadership in your organization, and you’ll be rewarded with a more effective, engaged and motivated team.
