ICT Usage Among MSMEs in Jamaica

In this study, we aimed to understand the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) usage levels among MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) in Jamaica and the factors influencing their adoption of ICT. We also wanted to explore the competitive strategies employed by these businesses and how they relate to the level of ICT usage. To gather data for this research, we used a survey design with a self-administered questionnaire distributed to 220 MSMEs in the parishes of St. Catherine, St. Thomas, Kingston, and St. Andrew.

Our findings suggest an average level of ICT usage among these businesses, with E-commerce being the most commonly used form of ICT. A high percentage of businesses reported that ICT’s Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) was likely to impact their decision to adopt it. We also found that competitive strategies, as measured by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), had a significant relationship with the level of ICT usage among MSMEs.

Overall, our research highlights the importance of ICT for MSMEs in Jamaica to achieve a competitive advantage and stimulate growth and development in the local economy. Understanding the factors that influence ICT adoption and the strategies employed by these businesses can help policymakers and stakeholders support the use of ICT among MSMEs and promote their success.
